Detective Chess
A downloadable game
This is a free prototype of a Chess variant I'm working on. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!
This is a game for two players that assumes both has an understanding of how to play standard Chess.
At the start of the game each player gets a secret extra rule from a deck of over 100 possible rules. As you play you need to enforce your rule when your opponent rules without giving too much information away about what exactly it is. In order to win you need to successfully deduce what your opponents secret rule is based on experimentation and observation of their tactics.
The deck of Secret Rules is available as a print and play PDF, but you will also require a complete Chess set and some D6s to play.

Looking through some of the modifications, some of these rules would be found out pretty quickly and just make play pretty miserable (the pawns can’t capture or be captured means you would most likely end up with two impassable walls with little gates for your bishops). Others involve play states that rarely happen and don’t really impact strategy that deeply (the modification of pawn promotion doesn’t make promotion more likely to occur).
Great point about the pawn can't be captured one, I'll have a look at nerfing it or straight up removing it.
interesting thought about promotions, it hadn't occurred to me to have a rule that modifies the frequency of promotions so that may work better than one which adjusts the nature of them.
